Fall Dog Photo Shoot in Columbus, Ohio with Melly & Solie
Yes... I know it's July.
It probably seems a little strange to see a gorgeous fall photography session popping up in the middle of summer. The truth is, I'm still catching up after taking an unexpected hiatus from blogging.
Earlier this year, I lost both of my dogs just weeks apart. It completely turned my world upside down, and for a while, work naturally took a back seat while I focused on grieving and healing. Photography never stopped, but sharing these beautiful sessions with all of you did.
So now, I'm finally getting back to doing one of my favorite things—showing off the incredible dogs I have the privilege of photographing.
Why Fall Is My Favorite Time for Dog Photography
There is just something magical about autumn in Columbus, Ohio.
The rich golds, fiery oranges, deep reds, and warm evening light create a backdrop that almost looks like a painted storybook page. All these beautiful colors make the perfect stage for allowing your dog to become the star of the image without overwhelming the scene. Melly and Solie here looked absolutely gorgeous surrounded by the sea of color.
Rescue Dogs Can Make Incredible Models
One of my favorite parts of this session wasn't actually the scenery—it was watching these two shy rescue dogs discover that having their pictures taken could actually be fun. Like many rescue dogs, Melly and Solie weren't immediately sure about this strange person with a camera making funny noises and asking them to look in different directions. That's completely normal.
One thing I've learned after spending more than 15 years photographing dogs is that the best sessions aren't about forcing poses. They're about building trust.
We move at the dog's pace. We celebrate their curiosity. We reward confidence, and make everything positive.
As the session went on, you could actually see their personalities begin to shine. The camera stopped being something scary and simply became part of the adventure. By the end, they were exploring, playing, and offering expressions that perfectly captured who they are. Those authentic moments that capture the essence of the dog are always my favorite.
Your Dog Doesn't Have to Be Perfect For Us To Get Amazing Pet Portraits
One of the biggest misconceptions people have before booking a pet photography session is that their dog has to be perfectly trained or love having their picture taken.
They don't.
In fact, many of the dogs you see throughout my portfolio were nervous, distracted, goofy, overly excited, full of energy, or shy when we first met.
Photographing dogs isn't about expecting them to behave like statues. It's about understanding dog behavior, using patience, positive reinforcement, and good timing to create images that look effortless. Embracing the chaos is half the fun of pet photography!
Whether your dog is a confident social butterfly or a timid rescue who's still learning to trust the world, we can create beautiful portraits together.
Looking Ahead to Fall Sessions
Even though we're in the middle of summer, seeing these images has me counting down until the leaves begin changing again.
If you've been dreaming about updating your family photos with your dog or celebrating a newly adopted rescue, fall is one of the most popular times of year for pet photography in Columbus. The combination of vibrant foliage, comfortable temperatures, and beautiful natural light makes it an incredible season for creating artwork you'll treasure for years.
Melly and Solie were proof that you don't need a perfectly confident dog to create stunning portraits. Sometimes all it takes is a little patience, a pocket full of treats, and giving your dog the opportunity to discover that the camera isn't scary after all.
And once they do, the magic happens.
